Germany’s Federal Office for Information Security (BSI) was established on 1st of January 1991 and is part of the Federal Ministry of the Interior. The BSI is an independent and neutral body dedicated to issues of IT security in the information society. There is no comparable government agency elsewhere in Europe. It currently employs approximately 500 computer scientists, physicists, mathematicians and other staff. The BSI is headquartered in Bonn.
The rapid advancement of information technology is seeing new IT applications emerge in almost all areas of everyday life – and hence forever new security vulnerabilities as well. The BSI analyzes security risks in the deployment of information technology and develops security safeguards. The agency informs about risks and hazards in using information technology and endeavours to find solutions to eliminate them.
